Apollo and Daphne

This series of hand painted lino prints is inspired by the Greek myth and Piero del Pollaiolo's painting from the fifteenth century. Daphne, the daughter of the river god Peneus, was being relentlessly pursued by the god Apollo (Eros was to blame) until she cried out and appealed to her father for help. The painting depicts the end of the chase – when she is grabbed by Apollo, but also the moment she is transformed into a laurel tree (or Daphne, the ancient Greek name for laurel) by Peneus. A more modern inspiration comes from the following Bob Dylan lyrics, the enigmatic imagery reminding me of Daphne’s plight:

They shaved her head
She was torn between Jupiter and Apollo
A messenger arrived with a black nightingale
I seen her on the stairs and I couldn't help but follow
Follow her down past the fountain where they lifted her veil
(‘Changing of the Guards’, 1978)

Each hand-painted lino print in this series is available for purchase as an original work. The first in this series is also available as a limited edition archival print. Contact May/see Store.
